‘Impressionism & Stencil Art is a year nine scheme of work I designed to reengage disaffected year nine male students, in response to the Art department’s improvement plan. The aim of this SOW is to teach students to reflect on global, social and anti social issues that affect today’s society, through the study of Street and Stencil Art, and compare these issues against idealised Impressionist landscapes. This allows students to explore two contrasting Art movements. Evidence of student learning was presented in sketchbooks and as a final piece. The assessment criteria is based on Edexcel assessment objectives.

AO1: Develop

Students researched and studied Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Street and Stencil Art history using a variety of methods eg, books, internet and galleries. They organised and displayed this in their sketchbooks, demonstrating a critical and analytical understanding of how and why the Impressionist developed their style, as well as discussing the social comments that street artists such as Banksy are trying to make.

AO2: Refine (Experiment)

Students experimented with different art media, practising and refining different techniques and processes developed by the Impressionists and stencil artists.

AO3: Record

Students demonstrate tone and shading in the style of the Impressionists. They wrote about global, social or anti social issues that interested them, and designed stencils to help illustrate their chosen topic.

AO4: Present

Students presented a final piece showing links to their chosen global, social or anti social topic, and juxtaposed this against a background based on an Impressionist painting.
